The Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, created some big changes in the health insurance industry. These changes are designed to give consumers increased protection and guaranteed minimum coverage for essential care. Plans that meet the criteria outlined by the ACA are known as Affordable Care Act compliant. The ACA mandates that your health insurance plan must provide coverage for the following essential benefits:

1. Outpatient care
2. Emergency room care
3. Hospital inpatient care
4. Pre and post-natal care
5. Mental health and substance abuse treatment
6. Prescription drugs
7. Lab tests
8. Preventative services
9. Pediatric services
10. Rehabilitory services after an accident or due to a chronic illness or disability

In addition, the ACA also mandates that these plans must also be available to everyone.

Am I required to have health insurance? What happens if I don't have it?

Health insurance not only protects you from large medical bills but also gives you access to a network of medical professionals in your area helping you find the best care possible. Additionally, the Affordable Care Act mandates that you must have health insurance. If you do not have health insurance, you may have to pay a tax penalty. Although some people may be exempt from this fine, the vast majority of people without health insurance will be subject to the penalty.

Obamacare plans come in five different coverage levels, known as metal plans: Catastrophic, Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum.
